Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Calls for Debate, Discussions in House Amid Opposition Heat

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called on the ruling party and Opposition to ensure meaningful debates and constructive discussions in Parliament amid growing political tensions over electoral reforms and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, on the sidelines of the Conference of Chairpersons of Public Accounts Committees of Parliament and State and Union Territory Legislatures in Thiruvananthapuram, Birla stressed that disagreements and different political viewpoints are an integral part of democracy.
He said Parliament should provide an appropriate platform for discussing important national issues and resolving differences through dialogue rather than disruptions.
His remarks came amid intensified Opposition protests against the Election Commission of India over the SIR exercise. Opposition parties have been demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while the BJP has launched a countercampaign defending the electoral process.
SIR Debate Likely to Become a Major Political Issue
The Opposition's campaign against the SIR exercise is expected to remain a significant political issue during the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
When asked whether the electoral roll revision would be discussed in Parliament, Birla said the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) would decide which issues should be taken up in the House.
He also clarified that he had not received any notice seeking the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Disqualification Proceedings Against 20 MPs
Birla also addressed the ongoing disqualification proceedings involving 20 MPs who broke away from Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and aligned with the NDA constituent Nationalist Citizens Party of India.
He confirmed that the MPs had again requested an extension, marking their fifth such request. The matter is currently under his examination following the disqualification petition filed by the Trinamool Congress under the anti-defection law.
Parliament's Next Session Remains Uncertain
There is also uncertainty surrounding the next sitting of Parliament. The Monsoon Session was adjourned sine die on August 13, 2026, but has not yet been prorogued.
The government has not announced a final decision on whether a special sitting will be convened, while the Winter Session is expected towards the end of November or early December.
Birla's appeal for constructive dialogue highlights the importance of parliamentary debate, institutional accountability and cooperation between the government and Opposition at a time of growing political confrontation.
