Pargat Singh Takes Charge as Punjab Congress Chief, Sets Focus on 2027 Assembly Polls

Former India hockey captain and three-time Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh has been appointed as the new president of the Punjab Congress as the party prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Singh, 62, takes charge at a time when the Punjab Congress has been facing differences among its senior leaders. His appointment comes after former state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring stepped down from the post.
Speaking about his new responsibility, Singh said his priority would be to keep the organisation united and focus on winning the Assembly elections.
Pargat Singh Says Congress Must Stay United
Addressing questions about factionalism within the Punjab Congress, Singh said differences of opinion are normal in a democracy and political party.
He rejected the idea that the organisation should be viewed through the lens of different factions and said the Congress has a much bigger objective — winning the 2027 Assembly elections.
Singh stressed that Congress workers should remain focused on Punjab and the party.
He said that, as party workers, they have no “wajood” (existence) and “aukaat” (standing) outside Punjab and without the Congress. According to him, the focus should therefore remain on strengthening the party and working for Punjab.
‘I Have Always Been a Team Player’
Pargat Singh also drew on his hockey career to explain his approach to political leadership.
Describing himself as a “team player”, Singh said that he played as a full-back during his hockey career. He compared the role of a political leader to that of a player in a team, where everyone has a particular responsibility.
He said the Congress needs to identify the strengths of its leaders and give them appropriate responsibilities.
His stated objective is to take everyone along and ensure victory for the Congress team in the 2027 elections.
Congress Targets Majority in 117-Seat Punjab Assembly
Singh said that the immediate priority is not the question of who will become Chief Minister but winning the election.
He said the decision on the Chief Minister would be the prerogative of the elected legislators after the election.
According to Singh, Congress candidates should be selected on the basis of merit, surveys, winnability and character, with no other consideration taking priority.
He said the party's main organisational goal is to build a strong Congress organisation and win a majority of the 117 Assembly seats in Punjab.
‘Brand Punjab’ at the Centre of Congress Strategy
Singh said the Congress would seek to revive “brand Punjab” and put the state's interests at the centre of its political campaign.
He identified several major issues that would form part of this Punjab-centric approach, including law and order, drugs, the economy, Punjab's mounting debt, farming and women's safety.
Singh also said the Congress would seek accountability from both the BJP and the AAP.
Responding to the BJP's criticism of the Congress's long period in power, he said the Congress would also question the BJP about its years in government and seek accountability from the AAP for its record in Punjab.
Congress to Present a Punjab-Centric Narrative
Singh said the Congress does not want to make what he described as illogical allegations. Instead, the party wants to present a clear Punjab-centric political narrative.
According to Singh, Punjab has its own identity and concerns, and the state should therefore remain at the centre of the Congress's political strategy.
This approach is likely to shape the party's campaign as it prepares for the 2027 Assembly election.
Multi-Cornered Contest Expected in Punjab
The 2027 Punjab Assembly election is expected to involve several political parties, including the Congress, AAP, BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Waris Punjab De (WPD).
Asked about WPD, Singh said he viewed it like any other political party in the state. He said every group has the right to form a political party and contest elections.
However, Singh made it clear that his priority is to make the Congress victorious in the 2027 Assembly election.
Pargat Singh's Challenge Ahead of 2027
As the new Punjab Congress president, Pargat Singh faces the challenge of bringing different sections of the party together while strengthening the organisation ahead of the Assembly polls.
His emphasis on teamwork reflects his background as a hockey player and former India captain. He has indicated that he wants senior leaders and party workers to work together rather than remain focused on internal differences.
With the 2027 Punjab Assembly election approaching, Singh's immediate focus will be on strengthening the Congress organisation, selecting candidates based on merit and winnability, and building a campaign around the interests and issues of Punjab.
For Singh, the central message is that the Congress must put its internal differences aside and work collectively towards one objective: winning the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.
