Tamil Nadu Political Crisis 17 Prisoners Escape From Theni Jail, DMK Attacks CM Vijay Govt Over Law and Order Failure

Tamil Nadu politics has witnessed a major upheaval in the last 48 hours. What began as a jailbreak in Theni district has now turned into a direct political confrontation between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led TVK government and the opposition DMK.
On Monday night, 17 undertrial prisoners escaped from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni district. According to police officials, the inmates broke the lock of their barracks and scaled the boundary wall under the cover of darkness. Although all 17 escapees were rearrested by Tuesday evening, the political damage was already done.
DMK President M K Stalin immediately reacted to the incident. In a post on social media platform X, he said that such a mass escape of prisoners has not occurred in Tamil Nadu since 1995. He termed the TVK government utterly incompetent and incapable of protecting people. Stalin said he earlier believed the government was failing to monitor criminals on bail, but now the situation has reached a stage where even prisoners inside jail are allowed to escape.
Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi and other DMK leaders also criticised the government. They alleged that since TVK assumed office, incidents of inmates escaping from observation homes, police stations and prisons have become frequent.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami targeted a single minister - C T R Nirmal Kumar, who handles Law, Electricity and Prisons. Palaniswami said all three departments under him are mired in controversies. The law department is facing allegations of corruption in appointment of government lawyers, the electricity department is facing power cuts and corruption in power procurement, and now the prisons department has been hit by a jailbreak.
BJP leaders Tamilisai Soundararajan, Narayanan Thirupathy and Vanathi Srinivasan also said the incident exposed the failure to maintain law and order. Thirupathy claimed that more than 50 prisoners have escaped from various jails under the TVK regime.
However, the jailbreak is not the only flashpoint
On October 26, former School Education Minister and senior DMK leader Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested by the Central Crime Branch in Chennai. The case relates to an alleged Rs 100 crore bribe-for-clearance scam. It is alleged that money was collected from private school managements in exchange for statutory clearances and permanent recognition during the previous DMK regime. After the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, Poyyamozhi was remanded to judicial custody till November 6 at Puzhal Central Prison.
DMK cadres staged a protest outside the Chennai Police Commissioner's office against the arrest. The protest turned tense. Vepery police registered an FIR against senior DMK leader P K Sekar Babu, MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy and 10 others for allegedly abusing police personnel and obstructing government officials from discharging their duties.
During the same protest, a video went viral. Vellore DMK councillor Teeta Saravanan was heard saying, If we had finished him off at Karur on that day, we would not be in this situation today. The remark was allegedly directed at TVK President and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, in reference to the Karur stampede. Puzhal police traced Saravanan to a DMK functionary's house in Villupuram, arrested him and booked him under Sections 192, 296(b), 353(1) and 351(3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Amid this political heat, Chief Minister Vijay chaired his third cabinet meeting today at 10:30 AM at the Secretariat. The agenda includes Battery Energy Storage System policy, clearance of industrial investment proposals and northeast monsoon preparedness. The government has also ordered a statewide prison security audit and plans to deploy armed guards at watchtowers.
With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, both parties are using every incident to gain political mileage. TVK says DMK is frustrated after losing power and is trying to malign the government. DMK says TVK has no administrative experience and law and order has completely collapsed.
For the common people, the concern is straightforward - whether prisons are secure, whether police can maintain public safety, and whether this political fight will impact daily governance. The coming days will be crucial as the Anbil Mahesh case comes up again in court and the prisons department submits its inquiry report.
