Manipur Politics: Centre Extends AFSPA Ahead of 2027 Election
The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in most parts of Manipur for another six months from October 1, 2026.
Under the latest notification, the entire state has been declared a "disturbed area", except areas falling under the jurisdiction of 13 police stations in five districts. The notification was issued after a review of the law-and-order situation in the state.

The AFSPA decision comes shortly after the killing of four Tangkhul Naga civilians in Pilong Naga village in Kamjong district near the India-Myanmar border.
According to Manipur Police, suspected Myanmar-based Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) militants allegedly entered the village and opened fire on civilians. Four people were killed in the incident. The police investigation is continuing.
The Tangkhul Naga Long condemned the killings and called a 24-hour emergency shutdown in its jurisdiction. The incident has renewed concerns over the security of villages located close to the international border.
The allegations concerning the involvement of KNA-B are based on the police account and should be distinguished from an independently established finding of responsibility.

The latest Kamjong attack follows other incidents of violence reported in Manipur during September.
In Tamenglong district, four people were killed in two separate attacks on Kuki settlements on September 13, according to police and reports. Another attack in the district subsequently killed two Kuki-Zo women.
A separate incident in Tamenglong district also involved the alleged killing of a 17-year-old Naga boy in an ambush, according to police reports cited by The Indian Express.
