Tamil Nadu Politics: TVK-PMK Talks Gain Momentum as Alliance Speculation Grows

Chennai | October 1, 2026
Political discussions surrounding Tamil Nadu's ruling alliance have intensified after reports indicated that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) are exploring closer political cooperation.
According to sources familiar with the developments, conversations between leaders of both parties have progressed beyond informal discussions and are now focused on the possibility of the PMK joining the ruling alliance. However, neither TVK nor PMK has officially confirmed any agreement.
The PMK contested the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election as part of the AIADMK-BJP alliance. More recently, the party decided not to support any candidate in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections scheduled for October 6, a move that has further fuelled speculation about its future political strategy.
Reports suggest that discussions have also included the possibility of Cabinet representation for PMK leaders if an alliance is finalised. However, no formal decision has been announced.
For Chief Minister Vijay, strengthening support in the Assembly remains politically significant after the TVK formed the government with the backing of alliance partners. Any expansion of the ruling coalition could improve the government's legislative position.
Political observers also note that any formal partnership between TVK and PMK could influence the dynamics of the existing alliance. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which is currently part of the ruling coalition, and the Left parties may reassess their political positions if PMK joins the government.
At the same time, PMK's previous association with the AIADMK-BJP alliance means any shift in its political alignment would carry wider implications for the opposition in Tamil Nadu.
With the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections approaching, political parties are closely watching developments, as the results and subsequent negotiations could shape the state's political landscape in the coming months.
As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding PMK's entry into the TVK-led government, and discussions remain at the negotiation stage.
