Uttar Pradesh Election 2027: AI-Generated Videos Emerge as New Battleground in BJP-SP Campaign

Lucknow, September 24, 2026: Artificial intelligence-generated videos are emerging as a new element of political communication in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) trading allegations over the creation and circulation of videos featuring characters resembling their leaders.
The BJP and SP have both denied producing derogatory AI-generated material targeting leaders of the opposing side. The dispute has added a digital dimension to the political campaign in Uttar Pradesh, where social media, short-form videos and other online content are increasingly being used alongside rallies, organisational activities and conventional political messaging.
AI Videos Become Part of UP Political Messaging
The issue gained wider attention after SP president Akhilesh Yadav displayed AI-generated videos during recent press interactions.
On August 31, Yadav showed an AI-generated video featuring a character resembling Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. According to The Indian Express, the video addressed issues that the Opposition has raised against the BJP-led state government, including allegations related to Ram Temple donations, price rise and women's safety.
Yadav said he had received the video from another source and called for an investigation into the social-media accounts from which such material was circulated. He also displayed another video that he alleged had been circulated against him and linked to the BJP. These allegations have not been independently established as proof of who created the videos.
The development has highlighted an important distinction in AI-generated political content: the circulation of a video does not by itself establish who created it, authorised it or distributed it.
SP Says Videos Were Created by Workers and Supporters
SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary told The Indian Express that the party was not producing the videos and said that workers and supporters had forwarded such material to party leaders.
The SP has also used some AI-generated content during public political interactions. On September 10, Yadav showed an AI video featuring characters resembling Yogi Adityanath and Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan, alongside actual footage concerning complaints about civic amenities in Gorakhpur.
Another video shown later featured an AI character resembling Akhilesh Yadav questioning a Yogi Adityanath lookalike. The video ended with a reference to the SP's PDA — Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak — political strategy for the 2027 election.
Yadav has said that political parties (opens in a new tab) will have to communicate with voters both on the ground and through digital platforms. He has also called for scrutiny of the sources behind AI-generated material targeting political leaders.
BJP Denies Producing Derogatory AI Videos
The BJP has similarly denied responsibility for derogatory AI-generated videos targeting SP leaders.
BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi told The Indian Express that the party uses AI tools but said BJP had not produced or uploaded derogatory videos through its official handles. He said AI could be used in political communication but should not be misused for objectionable content.
At the same time, BJP's Uttar Pradesh social-media campaign includes memes and videos comparing the previous SP government with the BJP government since 2017. The Indian Express also reported that an AI video circulated through a UP BJP social-media platform criticised the proposed SP-Congress seat-sharing arrangement and targeted Akhilesh Yadav.
The BJP's denial concerning derogatory AI videos and its broader use of digital campaign material represent two separate issues: the party acknowledges using AI tools while denying responsibility for specific derogatory content.
Digital Campaigning Expands Ahead of 2027 Election
The AI-video controversy is developing alongside wider preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies, and the current Assembly's term is scheduled to end on May 22, 2027, according to the Election (opens in a new tab) Commission of India. The official election schedule for the 2027 Assembly polls has not yet been announced.
The SP is continuing its political outreach around the PDA framework, while the BJP is pursuing organisational and government-development activities across the state. Both parties are also using social-media platforms to communicate their political messages.
This means that the next Uttar Pradesh election campaign is taking shape across several channels, including public meetings, rallies (opens in a new tab), party organisation, television and print media, websites and social-media platforms.
Why AI Verification Matters
AI-generated videos can create fictional scenes, characters and dialogue that resemble real political leaders. As a result, viewers may find it difficult to immediately distinguish between an authentic statement and digitally generated political satire or manipulated content.
The current BJP-SP dispute illustrates why the source of a video, the account that originally uploaded it, its context and whether the person shown actually made the statement are important questions before the material is treated as factual.
Political parties (opens in a new tab) may use AI and other digital tools as part of their communication strategies, but claims about responsibility for specific videos should be distinguished from verified evidence.
Uttar Pradesh Election 2027: A New Digital Campaign Arena
The emergence of AI-generated political videos adds another layer to the developing campaign for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
The BJP and SP continue to deny responsibility for specific derogatory AI videos targeting their leaders, while both sides are using digital platforms to communicate with supporters and respond to political narratives.
With Uttar Pradesh's 403-seat Assembly election approaching, AI-generated satire, short-form videos, memes and other digital formats are likely to remain part of the wider political communication environment. For voters and audiences following the campaign, checking the original source and context of such content will be important, particularly when videos portray political leaders making statements they may not actually have made.
Key Points AI-generated videos have emerged as a new element of political communication ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
