History
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was founded in 1999 by Sharad Pawar, P. A. Sangma, and Tariq Anwar after their differences with the Indian National Congress leadership. The party emerged as a political force in Maharashtra and subsequently expanded its electoral presence to other parts of India. NCP has participated in state and national elections and has formed or joined coalition governments at both the state and national levels. In Maharashtra, the party became an important participant in coalition politics and was part of governments led by different political alliances. In 2023, the party experienced a major organisational split between factions led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar. The Election Commission of India subsequently recognised the Ajit Pawar-led faction as the NCP and allotted it the party's original clock symbol, while the Sharad Pawar-led faction was recognised under a separate party name and symbol.
