BJP Attacks Karnataka Government Over Financial Management

Bengaluru, September 22, 2026: The Karnataka BJP (opens in a new tab) has stepped up criticism of the Congress-led state government over financial management, following reports of pressure on the state’s finances and concerns within the Finance Department over spending commitments.
The controversy comes as the Karnataka Finance Department has advised the government to exercise caution over expenditure and remain realistic while announcing new schemes. According to a report published on September 22, the department has raised concerns about a cash crunch affecting expenses, salary disbursements and subsidy payments. It has also advised the government to focus on generating additional revenue before committing funds to new projects.
The BJP has used the reported financial pressure to question the government's spending decisions and its ability to meet existing financial commitments. BJP leaders have also questioned the source of funding for major development announcements made by the state government.
On September 19, BJP Opposition Chief Whip in the Karnataka (opens in a new tab) Legislative Council N Ravi Kumar demanded a white paper on the source of funding for Rs 32,611 crore worth of development works announced for the three coastal Karnataka districts. He alleged that the state was facing significant financial pressure and claimed that pension payments and contractor bills were pending. These statements are political allegations by the BJP and have not been independently established in the same terms.
The Congress government has rejected the BJP's criticism. Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge defended the government's development announcements and accused the BJP of questioning initiatives being undertaken in the coastal districts. He argued that the government's focus was on development and challenged the BJP's criticism of the proposed projects.
