Panaji, September 21, 2026: Political activity in Goa has intensified ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, with alliance discussions becoming a major focus among the state's leading Political Parties (opens in a new tab). The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has reiterated its “Goa First” position while speculation has emerged over whether the regional party could reconsider its recently announced alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
AAP and GFP had announced their “Goa First” alliance earlier in September, presenting it as a political alternative to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress. The announcement came after discussions about building a broader political platform ahead of the February 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
The alliance has given GFP president Vijai Sardesai and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal a common platform for their election campaign. GFP currently has one MLA in the 40-member Goa Assembly, while AAP has two sitting MLAs. Sardesai represents Fatorda, while AAP's Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva represent Benaulim and Velim respectively.
Maharashtra's decision to declare 265 talukas drought-affected has triggered questions from both ruling alliance leaders and the Opposition. While some areas represented by Mahayuti leaders have been excluded, the MVA has questioned the transparency of the assessment process.
Amid the latest speculation, GFP has continued to emphasise its “Goa First” position and its stated objective of building a united and secular political alternative. The party's position comes at a time when several opposition groups are discussing possible combinations ahead of the election.
The uncertainty is significant because GFP had previously been associated with Congress during the 2022 Assembly election. Congress has indicated that its door remains open to GFP and other parties that want to work together ahead of the 2027 election.
Congress Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakare has said that the party is willing to work with political forces seeking to challenge the BJP in the upcoming election. His remarks have added another dimension to the ongoing alliance discussions.
AAP-GFP Campaign Takes Shape
The AAP-GFP alliance has already begun presenting itself through joint political messaging across Goa. Posters and outdoor campaign material featuring both parties have appeared in the state, highlighting their effort to establish a common political identity before the election campaign formally accelerates.
The two parties have focused their political messaging on local issues and the need for an alternative political platform. Their campaign is expected to include public meetings, Rallies (opens in a new tab)and a series of political programmes as the election approaches.
The alliance's campaign could also place greater emphasis on issues such as employment, land, environment, infrastructure, governance and Goa's regional identity. These issues have featured prominently in the political discourse surrounding the state's upcoming election.
Congress Keeps Alliance Options Open
Congress's latest statements indicate that alliance discussions remain fluid. The party has maintained that it is open to working with GFP and other like-minded groups. This comes despite the recent announcement of the AAP-GFP “Goa First” alliance.
The situation means that the final political arrangements before the 2027 election may not yet be settled. Seat-sharing discussions, candidate selection and the possibility of additional parties joining existing alliances could influence the shape of the contest.
BJP Faces Multi-Party Opposition Landscape
The BJP remains the ruling party in Goa, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant leading the government. The emergence of the AAP-GFP alliance adds another political formation to an already competitive electoral environment.
For voters, the 2027 election (opens in a new tab) is expected to involve discussions around governance, development, employment, tourism, environmental protection and the future of Goa's political identity. The positions taken by the BJP, Congress, AAP and GFP on these issues are likely to feature prominently in campaign Speech (opens in a new tab) and election programmes.
With the Goa Assembly election expected before March 2027, political activity is likely to increase in the coming months. The continuing discussions between Congress and GFP, alongside the AAP-GFP alliance, indicate that alliance equations remain an important part of Goa's pre-election politics.

The INDIA bloc has announced a nationwide campaign over concerns related to the Election Commission and electoral processes. The Opposition plans protests, a march to the Election Commission headquarters, and a legal challenge to provisions of the Chief Election Commissioner Act, 2023.
Discussions between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have intensified, with reports suggesting alliance talks and possible Cabinet representation. However, no official announcement has been made by either party.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election approaching in 2027, the Samajwadi Party and Congress are working to strengthen their alliance after their improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe the opposition has an important opportunity, but unity and effective seat-sharing will be crucial.
