Pargat Singh Appointed Punjab Congress Chief Ahead of 2027 Assembly Election

The Indian National Congress has appointed former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). He replaces Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who resigned as Punjab Congress president on October 2, 2026. The appointment comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly Election 2027.
According to the Congress announcement, Pargat Singh's appointment takes effect immediately. The party also said that the existing working presidents and chairpersons and co-chairpersons of various election-related committees in Punjab would continue in their current roles.
Pargat Singh Takes Charge of Punjab Congress
Pargat Singh is the sitting MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment and has represented the constituency since 2012. Before entering politics, he was an international hockey player and captained the Indian national hockey team. He also represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Singh's political career began with the Shiromani Akali Dal, under whose banner he contested the 2012 Punjab Assembly election from Jalandhar Cantonment. He later moved into the Congress and won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat for the party in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.
He also served as a minister in the Punjab government led by then Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in 2021–22, handling portfolios that included School Education, Higher Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, and NRI Affairs.
Pargat Singh is currently also serving as an AICC secretary in charge of Jammu and Kashmir. He was appointed co-chairperson of the Congress manifesto committee for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election in July 2026.
Raja Warring Resigns as Punjab Congress Chief
The leadership change followed the resignation of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who had headed the Punjab Congress since April 2022.
Warring met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on October 2 and submitted his resignation. After the meeting, Warring said that he had conveyed his views regarding the Punjab party organisation to Gandhi. He also said he believed Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot may have decided that a leadership change was necessary, while acknowledging that he had no concrete proof of this.
The change followed organisational discussions within the Punjab Congress. Sachin Pilot had taken over as the party's Punjab affairs in-charge in September 2026, replacing former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and subsequently held consultations with leaders in the state.
Pargat Singh's Political Journey
Pargat Singh's transition from international hockey to politics has been a notable part of his public career. After retiring from international hockey, he worked in Punjab's sports administration and police service before entering electoral politics.
He won the Jalandhar Cantonment constituency in 2012 on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. After differences with the SAD, he became associated with the Awaaz-e-Punjab front before joining the Congress in 2016. He subsequently won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat on a Congress ticket in 2017 and retained it in 2022.
His appointment as PPCC president now gives him responsibility for leading the Congress organisation in Punjab as the state moves towards the 2027 Assembly election.
Congress Prepares for Punjab Assembly Election 2027
The leadership change comes at a significant stage in Punjab politics, with the next Assembly election due in 2027.
The Congress will now have Pargat Singh at the head of its state organisation, while other senior leaders continue to hold key organisational and electoral responsibilities. The party's campaign committee is headed by former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, while Partap Singh Bajwa is the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly.
Pargat Singh's immediate organisational responsibilities are expected to include coordinating the state party structure, working with senior Congress leaders and preparing the organisation for the upcoming Assembly election.
His appointment marks a change in the leadership of the Punjab Congress following Warring's resignation and places the former hockey captain at the centre of the party's preparations for the 2027 electoral contest.
Leadership Transition in Punjab Congress
The appointment of Pargat Singh follows a period of organisational discussions within the Punjab Congress. Reports before the appointment had identified several leaders as possible successors to Warring, including Pargat Singh and former minister Vijay Inder Singla.
With the Congress high command now formally appointing Pargat Singh, the focus shifts towards the functioning of the state organisation and its preparations for the Punjab Assembly Election 2027.
The leadership transition is therefore an important organisational development for the Congress in Punjab, while the party's performance in the next Assembly election will depend on its campaign, organisation, leadership coordination and electoral strategy as the contest develops.
