Chandigarh, September 24, 2026: Political activity in Punjab is intensifying ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress increasing their organisational and grassroots activities across the state.
Punjab's Legislative Assembly has 117 seats, meaning a party or alliance needs 59 seats for a simple majority. According to the Election Commission of India, the current Punjab Assembly's term runs from March 17, 2022, to March 16, 2027. The official polling schedule for the next election (opens in a new tab) has not yet been announced.
Maharashtra's decision to declare 265 talukas drought-affected has triggered questions from both ruling alliance leaders and the Opposition. While some areas represented by Mahayuti leaders have been excluded, the MVA has questioned the transparency of the assessment process.
The Aam Aadmi Party has moved into a more visible election campaign phase, focusing on its record since forming the Punjab government in 2022.
On September 19, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched the party's 2027 election pamphlet in Ludhiana. AAP said its campaign would take the government's work directly to households, with issues including electricity, healthcare, education, employment, welfare measures and canal water for farmers forming part of its message.
The following day, Mann launched the party's door-to-door campaign in Dhuri. AAP is using the slogan "Mann Da Munafa" to describe what it says are financial benefits delivered to households through government schemes. Mann said the campaign would focus on presenting the government's record to voters.
AAP had earlier announced that around 2.68 lakh booth committee members would participate in its statewide door-to-door outreach beginning September 20. The party is also running a membership campaign alongside its election preparations.
BJP Expands Its Punjab Election Campaign
The BJP is also stepping up its activities ahead of the election.
The party has announced an extensive anti-drug campaign through its Nasha Mukt Yatra. The four simultaneous yatras began from different parts of Punjab on September 18 and are planned to cover approximately 4,000 kilometres and all 117 Assembly constituencies, before concluding in Jalandhar on September 30. The campaign places drug abuse at the centre of the BJP's political outreach.
The BJP had also stated earlier that it intended to contest all 117 Assembly seats independently. BJP national general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santhosh said the party was preparing its organisation across the state ahead of the 2027 polls.
There has also been political discussion about a possible BJP-SAD understanding. While BJP leaders have publicly spoken about contesting independently, media reports have noted continuing speculation about the relationship between the two parties (opens in a new tab). No final alliance arrangement should therefore be treated as confirmed unless officially announced.
Congress Reorganises Ahead of the Election
Congress is also preparing for the 2027 contest while working through organisational issues in Punjab.
On September 5, the Congress appointed Sachin Pilot as the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel in the role. The change came amid internal differences within the Punjab Congress organisation.
Pilot has subsequently begun engaging with the state unit. At a September 15 Congress protest in Chandigarh, Pilot appeared alongside Punjab Congress leaders including Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Charanjit Singh Channi, in a public display of coordination ahead of the election campaign.
Pilot has also said that Congress does not intend to project a chief ministerial face before the Punjab election and that the party will fight the election as a team.
Farmers, Drugs and Governance Among Key Campaign Issues
Agriculture remains an important issue in Punjab, particularly as the paddy harvesting season approaches. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently told farmers that the state government would not register FIRs against farmers for stubble burning and called for practical measures to address crop-residue management.
Mann has also highlighted canal irrigation and water management in recent interactions with farmers. At Punjab Agricultural University's Kisan Mela, he discussed the expansion of canal-water use and the government's approach to groundwater management.
Drug abuse is another major issue in the emerging campaign. The BJP's statewide Nasha Mukt Yatra has placed the issue at the centre of its political outreach, while AAP has challenged the BJP's claims and highlighted its own record and allegations concerning the role of previous governments. These are competing political claims and should be distinguished from independently verified findings.
Social Media Graphics and Election Claims
Political graphics circulating on social media have also begun referring to the 2027 Punjab election and highlighting basic electoral facts such as the 117 Assembly seats and the 59-seat majority mark.
However, a graphic that does not identify a polling agency, methodology, sample size, fieldwork dates or source data should not be presented as an opinion poll or election forecast. It is more accurately described as a political or informational graphic unless its polling credentials can be independently verified.
Similarly, claims about which party will win or how many seats a party could obtain should not be treated as established facts before the election.
Punjab Election 2027: Campaign Activity Increases
The 2027 Punjab Assembly election is gradually becoming a central focus of state politics. AAP has begun taking its government record directly to households, BJP is expanding its statewide organisational and anti-drug campaign, and Congress is reorganising its Punjab unit under new state in-charge Sachin Pilot.
The Shiromani Akali Dal and other political groups will also remain part of the electoral landscape, while questions around alliances, candidates and constituency-level strategies are likely to develop further as the election approaches.
For now, the documented developments point to an increasingly active campaign environment, but the final electoral contest will depend on candidate announcements, party alliances, campaign issues and voter decisions closer to polling day.
