History & Achievements

History
Puducherry has a distinctive political history shaped by its French colonial past and its integration with India. The territory consists of four geographically separated regions: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The Legislative Assembly was established under the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963. Puducherry is one of India's Union Territories with its own elected Legislative Assembly and Council of Ministers. The 2026 Assembly election elected the 16th Puducherry Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 30 elected seats, and the 2026 results gave AINRC 12 seats, DMK 5, BJP 4, TVK 2, Congress 1, LJK 1, AIADMK 1, Neyam Makkal Kazhagam 1 and Independents 3. The National Democratic Alliance retained power in 2026, with N. Rangasamy continuing as Chief Minister. The current Assembly includes representation from AINRC, BJP, DMK, Congress, TVK and other parties and independents. Puducherry's political landscape has historically included the Indian National Congress, DMK, AIADMK, AINRC and other regional political forces. The territory's politics is strongly influenced by its four regions, local development issues, welfare policies, employment, infrastructure and relations between the elected government and the Union administration.
