UP Assembly Election 2027: SP-Congress Alliance Sees Key Opportunity to Challenge BJP

Lucknow | September 30, 2026
As political activity intensifies ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2027, the opposition alliance between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress is preparing to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is aiming to retain power for a third consecutive term in the state.
The alliance has gained confidence following its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. While the BJP remained the single largest party in the state, its seat tally declined compared to the 2019 general election. The SP emerged as the strongest opposition force, and the Congress also improved its performance after several years.
Political analysts believe the upcoming Assembly election presents one of the strongest opportunities for the opposition to put up a serious challenge. However, they also note that success will depend on maintaining unity, reaching a broad section of voters, and avoiding divisions among opposition parties.
The SP continues to focus on expanding its support beyond its traditional voter base by reaching out to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits and other communities. Congress, on the other hand, is looking to strengthen its organisation in the state while seeking a larger role in seat-sharing negotiations.
At the same time, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), led by Mayawati, remains an independent political force. Although the party's electoral strength has declined in recent years, political observers believe it could still influence the outcome in several constituencies by attracting a section of Dalit voters.
Several political issues, including unemployment, recruitment examinations, farmers' concerns and social justice, are expected to dominate the campaign as parties prepare for the 2027 polls. Smaller regional parties representing different caste groups are also expected to play an important role in closely contested seats.
The BJP has continued its outreach among different social groups while highlighting its governance and development agenda. Meanwhile, opposition leaders Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi have stressed the importance of coordination within the alliance to present a united challenge.
With months remaining before voting begins, political parties are expected to intensify organisational activities, public outreach and alliance discussions. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly election is likely to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the country due to the state's significant role in national politics.
